Welcome Visitors

Yesterday evening we discovered a pair of hooded mergansers on the small pond, all by their lonesome.  The light was in the wrong place and it was getting pretty dark, but they were fun to see.  This morning I ventured down to see if our two visitors were still there and much to my delight, they were.

We don’t see them much around here, their summer and breeding grounds are north of here, as far north as into Canada, so these two are just passing through headed for home after a long winters stay in the south.

What I like about this image is not so much the merganser as the background water.  Very nice reflections of the trees and sky behind him as well as the textures in the water.  Oh, and yes, this is the male, always the more striking of the two.

It will be interesting to see how long they hang around.  The temperatures are supposed to be pretty warm the next week, so they may not be long for our little pond.

Be sure to click on the images to see them bigger.

Great photos Mark, and I’m sorry that your lens will be in for a cleaning for the next few weeks. I will pick it up in the morning and return it as soon as I can get it properly cleaned!

Thanks to you both for your kind words, although I’m not so sure about you Deb!
